BACK TO ONE:

A COMING OF SELF MUSICAL

Back to One: A Coming of Self Musical is a one act musical in development written and composed by Socks Whitmore with additional music and orchestrations by Stephanie L. Carlin. Jacob Tinnell doesn't like to talk about the years he spent on set as a child actress—he's determined to leave acting behind and tell stories of his own as a screenwriter. But when his sister Ashley shows up on his doorstep to try and drag him down memory lane, he finds that the solution to his torturous writer's block may be in the last place he wanted to look: his past.

Back to One was first staged in 2020 at the CalArts Coffeehouse Theater, where Socks played Jacob’s well-meaning, overeager older sister Ashley. At the 2023 CalArts 50th Anniversary Alumnx Happenings Showcase, it was presented in concert reading form and Socks played Lizzy, the memory of Jacob’s younger self wrestling with gender dysphoria.

Songs from Back to One have been performed at Pepperdine University’s Spring 2021 Review CONTEMPO, Ring of Keys 2021 KEYFEST, WE ARE TRANS Fest 2020, WE ARE TRANS Weekly Livestream, CalArts Voices Must Be Heard, WeHo Pride, and the 2024 Celebration Honors Gala.
